Implementing Organization: NCRO
Duration: 2025–2027
Status: Ongoing
Sector: Food Security & Agriculture
About the Project
The Afghanistan Emergency Food Security Project is being implemented by NCRO in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Nangarhar Province. The project supports vulnerable and food-insecure farming and rural households through agricultural assistance, technical training, livelihood support, and community-based resilience activities.
The project aims to strengthen household food security and rural livelihoods while improving agricultural production and community resilience. Support includes wheat production assistance, summer crop and vegetable cultivation, backyard poultry, farmer training, Farmer Field Schools, Community Interest Groups, and community-based early warning activities.
Project Activities
The project provides targeted agricultural support to vulnerable farming households, including wheat cultivation assistance, certified seed support, summer crop and vegetable production packages, and technical training.
Farmer Field Schools provide practical learning opportunities for farmers, while backyard poultry support helps vulnerable rural households diversify their livelihood opportunities. The project also supports Community Interest Groups to strengthen local cooperation, agricultural skills, market access, and community participation.
Project Results & Targets
The project is designed to reach thousands of vulnerable farming and rural households across targeted communities in Nangarhar. Key planned targets include support for 23,017+ farmer households through project activities, 11,000 households with additional wheat packages, 4,500 households through certified wheat seed vouchers, 1,867 households with vegetable cultivation support, and 650 households with backyard poultry assistance. The project also plans to establish 26 Community Interest Groups and 30 Farmer Field Schools.
Community Resilience
Building Community Resilience
An important part of the project is strengthening the capacity of communities to prepare for and respond to risks. Community Interest Groups encourage local participation and cooperation, while a community-based multi-hazard early warning system helps provide timely information and practical advisories related to hazards such as drought and floods.
